Pashto Interpreter

The Gist:

Enable critical communication between ICRC staff and people affected by conflict through interpretation in detention visits, family reunification, and dialogue with authorities. Ideal for someone fluent in Pashto/Dari with humanitarian commitment and ability to work in complex, sometimes dangerous settings.

What You’d Be Doing:

  • Provide oral interpretation (Pashto/Dari to English) during confidential interviews with detainees, institutional briefings, and ICRC dialogue with authorities
  • Translate written documents (articles, diplomatic correspondence) between Pashto/Dari and English as needed
  • Analyze and report on detention conditions, security, and humanitarian environment
  • Support other protection activities including family tracing and Red Cross messaging

What They’re Looking For:

  • Education: University degree in interpretation or translation is an advantage but not required.
  • Experience: 2 years of professional experience required; previous interpreter or translator experience is an advantage.
  • Standout Qualifications: Proficiency in additional ICRC operational languages (French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese) is a strong asset.

You are deeply motivated by humanitarian work in complex, high-risk environments, can maintain composure under pressure and in confined settings, possess strong cultural awareness, and are willing to accept unaccompanied field postings for 12+ months.

Languages:

Excellent command of English (C1) and Pashto and/or Dari (C1) required; preference for Pashto.
