Foreign Affairs Officer

The Gist:

Shape how the U.S. controls defense exports by writing policy, negotiating with foreign governments, and ensuring companies follow the rules. This is for someone who wants to work on the mechanics of arms control from inside State Department.

What You’d Be Doing:

• Interpret and enforce ITAR, EAR, AECA, and related export control laws; issue official guidance to agencies and industry
• Represent the U.S. in international negotiations on export control regimes
• Draft regulatory changes and review other agencies’ modifications to export control rules
• Brief senior officials and Congress; coordinate across government and with foreign counterparts on policy implementation

What They’re Looking For:

• Experience: One year at GS-13 level (or equivalent) with hands-on experience in defense trade policy development, ITAR compliance coordination, and interagency political-military work.
• Standout Qualifications: Experience drafting Congressional testimony, policy memos for senior officials, or managing special projects across international stakeholders.
