The Gist:
Use open-source intelligence to track emerging threats in AI, biosecurity, and national security for RAND’s Center on AI, Security, and Technology. You’ll investigate actors, capabilities, and trends that matter to U.S. policymakers and industry partners.
What You’d Be Doing:
- Run investigations across open and commercial sources to monitor AI developments, biosecurity progress, and US-China technology flows
- Track technical and scientific developments in high-consequence areas including Chinese semiconductors, synthetic biology, and AI alignment risks
- Map organizations and talent networks; produce clear, decision-ready assessments for internal teams and government/industry partners
- Own investigations end-to-end, following threads across ambiguous, novel national-security questions
What They’re Looking For:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree minimum in a relevant field (computer science, mathematics, physics, biology, policy, international relations, or similar); Master’s or PhD preferred depending on experience level.
- Experience: Around 5+ years of relevant professional experience in national security, technology analysis, or foreign-actor tracking; or 3 years with a Master’s degree, or 1 year of AI-focused experience for technical track.
- Standout Qualifications: Familiarity with AI or life sciences, ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance, and a track record of rigorous open-source analysis in fast-paced environments.
