The Gist:
A semester-long volunteer project with the State Department where you’ll research commercial sectors and trading partners across East Africa using open-source data and AI tools. Ideal for students interested in international trade, economics, or commercial diplomacy.
What You’d Be Doing:
- Research the top five commercial sectors in nine East African countries (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania) and identify major trading partners for each
- Analyze local and regional industry leaders within each sector, considering political and economic dynamics
- Create white papers presenting findings with sector analyses, best-practice AI prompts, and research strategies for ongoing analysis
- Present work to U.S. Embassy economic sections and help identify commercial collaboration opportunities
What They’re Looking For:
- Education: Must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited college, university, trade school, technical institute, junior college, or vocational institute for Spring 2027, with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and good academic standing.
- Standout Qualifications: Preferred candidates have a business, trade, or economics major and practical knowledge of AI tools for research and prompt design.
Good Fit If:
You’re a current student interested in international commerce or diplomacy, comfortable with independent research and AI tools, and can work in-person at a U.S. Embassy in East Africa. You want hands-on exposure to how trade strategy shapes U.S. foreign policy.
