Semester of Service Volunteer – Congressional Data Management

The Gist:

Help the State Department’s legislative bureau rebuild and modernize how it tracks and retrieves congressional information. This is a project-based volunteer role for students who want hands-on experience with data management and AI tools.

What You’d Be Doing:

  • Duplicate and update a SharePoint tracker for congressional engagements to reflect the new Congress starting January 2027
  • Migrate existing congressional documents (hearing transcripts, briefing notes, letters, travel records) into a custom AI tool
  • Configure a custom GPT model so State Department staff can easily search and retrieve congressional materials

What They’re Looking For:

  • Education: Must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited institution (trade school, college, university, etc.) for Spring 2027 with a minimum 2.0 GPA; submit transcripts.
  • Standout Qualifications: AI programming or machine learning experience is preferred but not required.

You’re detail-oriented, comfortable learning new tools quickly, and interested in how government actually manages information. You want real-world experience in data management and modern AI applications without needing years of prior work experience.
