The Gist:
Issue certificates of authentication under the State Department seal and review documents submitted to foreign embassies, courts, and federal agencies. This role is for detail-oriented professionals who can apply federal regulations to certify document authenticity.
What You’d Be Doing:
- Issue certificates of authentication using the Secretary of State’s seal and signature on assigned documents
- Recommend authentication actions on documents submitted to foreign embassies, courts, and federal agencies per Department regulations
- Process moderately complex cases received via appointment, mail, and counter service
- Apply laws, regulations, and policies to ensure compliance with federal information safeguarding requirements
What They’re Looking For:
- Education: Master’s degree, J.D./LL.B., or equivalent graduate education; or combination of graduate coursework and experience totaling 100%.
- Experience: For GS-9: 1 year specialized experience at GS-7 level (or equivalent education/experience combination). For GS-11: 1 year at GS-9 level. For GS-12: 1 year at GS-11 level with no education substitution.
- Standout Qualifications: Prior experience with document authentication, legal document analysis, or fraud prevention in government contexts is preferred.
Good Fit If:
You’re comfortable interpreting complex federal regulations and applying them consistently to authenticate documents. You have strong attention to detail and can handle both routine and unusual cases involving foreign and domestic government entities.
