Department of State - Agency Wide
The Gist:
Work as a consular professional at U.S. embassies and consulates abroad for up to 5 years, serving visa applicants and U.S. citizens overseas. This is an entry point to explore Foreign Service careers, not a guaranteed pathway to permanent employment.
What You’d Be Doing:
- Interview visa applicants and process consular applications
- Assist U.S. citizens with passport services, notarizations, and emergency aid
- Represent the U.S. government and build relationships with local communities
- Handle administrative and customer service tasks at overseas posts
What They’re Looking For:
- Experience: Fluency in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, or Spanish required. Strong English communication skills, basic computer proficiency, and customer service experience preferred.
- Standout Qualifications: Experience with high-stress interpersonal situations, international travel, or prior work with diverse populations is a plus.
Good Fit If:
You want authentic overseas work experience before committing to the Foreign Service, you’re comfortable with uncertainty (assignments can end anytime per Department needs), and you speak one of the required languages fluently. You view this as a trial run, not a guaranteed job offer.
