Legal Assistant

International Rescue Committee

The Gist:

Support a new legal services program providing immigration representation to unaccompanied children in ORR custody in Dallas-Fort Worth. You’ll help identify relief options like asylum or special immigrant juvenile status and prepare immigration applications.

What You’d Be Doing:

  • Set up case files, input data into case management systems, and coordinate client meetings with attorneys
  • Conduct intakes with child clients, gather documents, prepare translations, and visit clients at shelters and facilities
  • Assist in preparing immigration filings for courts and USCIS; draft affidavits and legal correspondence
  • Provide Spanish-English interpretation at interviews and court hearings; translate documents; track deadlines and generate reports

What They’re Looking For:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent legal field work experience required.
  • Experience: Fluency in Spanish and English required; legal setting experience and work with children are highly desirable but not required.
  • Standout Qualifications: Trauma-informed communication skills, demonstrated commitment to immigrant and asylum-seeker communities, and comfort with ethically complex confidential situations are valued.

Good Fit If:

You’re deeply committed to helping vulnerable children navigate immigration law, comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, and able to travel frequently around Dallas-Fort Worth for court appearances and client visits. You bring strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and personal integrity to confidential work.
