Semester of Service Volunteer – Congressional Research Volunteer

The Gist:

Support the State Department’s Bureau of Legislative Affairs by researching and profiling members of key congressional committees. This is a project-based volunteer role for current students seeking hands-on policy research experience.

What You’d Be Doing:

• Research foreign policy positions and backgrounds of House Foreign Affairs Committee, Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and appropriations subcommittee members using open-source materials
• Draft individual member biographies and committee profiles following State Department templates
• Maintain and update biographies as members release new statements throughout the semester
• Prepare materials used by State Department leadership for congressional calls, meetings, and hearings

What They’re Looking For:

• Education: You must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited educational institution (college, university, trade school, vocational institute, or junior college) with a minimum 2.0 GPA and in good academic standing.
• Experience: Proficiency in online research, clear concise writing, Microsoft Word, and basic understanding of U.S. Congress and congressional committees required.
• Standout Qualifications: Ability to verify information independently, evaluate research sources critically, and work with limited AI access in some databases is valued.

You’re a current student interested in foreign policy and Congress, comfortable with detailed research and documentation, and able to work remotely within the U.S. You should be detail-oriented and able to synthesize public information into clear, actionable profiles.
