Semester of Service Volunteer – Strategic Communications & Data Modernization

The Gist:

A 90-120 day volunteer project with the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs building communications toolkits and data dashboards for EducationUSA and American Spaces. Ideal for students wanting hands-on experience in public diplomacy and international affairs.

What You’d Be Doing:

  • Design visual communications products (one-pagers, briefing decks, social media graphics) on digital freedom, STEM, and emerging technologies
  • Build a data visualization dashboard consolidating advising center metrics from multiple sources into a modernized reporting tool
  • Deliver a final presentation to office leadership with findings and a documented toolkit (templates, style guide, instructions) for ongoing use

What They’re Looking For:

  • Education: Must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited institution for Spring 2027 with a minimum 2.0 GPA and good academic standing.
  • Standout Qualifications: Graphic design experience with Adobe Creative Suite or Canva is preferred.

Good Fit If:

You’re a current student with strong communication skills, comfort with Excel and PowerPoint, and interest in how the U.S. government communicates foreign policy to global audiences. You want to build a portfolio of real design and data work while learning public diplomacy from the inside.
